Defining Menopause

Menopause is defined as the time moving forward from 12 months after a woman’s last natural menstrual period.

As a woman, our ovaries contain all the eggs we will release (ovulate) in our lifetimes and are the main hormonal factory (endocrine organ) in the female body responsible for the production of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

Oestrogen and progesterone are produced during a natural menstrual cycle and under their influence, a uterine lining (endometrium) grows, preparing for the possible conception of a baby.

Ovulation, the release of an egg, occurs midway through a natural menstrual cycle, carefully co-ordinated with the time that the uterine lining has reached receptivity for implantation of an egg fertilised by sperm to form an embryo and later a baby.

As a young child before puberty, hormone levels are similar to those experienced after menopause. However, mature women become addicted to oestrogen. In its’ absence we can suffer withdrawal symptoms such as temperature instability and hot flushes sleep disturbance, insomnia and low mood. In the absence of oestrogen our body shape changes with a tendency to gain weight centrally.

And unlike a young child, women are sexually active. Losing the effect of oestrogen can affect vaginal tissue integrity, comfort and resilience and can also affect desire, blunting libido and impairing arousal.

Some women are much more severely affected by these symptoms than others and choose to replace ovarian hormones systemically, known variously as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or menopausal hormonal therapy (MHT).

Some women are comfortable with menopause body changes systemically but still desire a healthy comfortable sex life (obviously - why wouldn’t you?).

Some women before perimenopause (the years leading up to menopause itself) and after menopause have never previously used intimate personal lubricants. Or perhaps they had and didn’t like the feeling of lubes principally designed more for a male pleasure focus.
