So, what does it take to get pregnant naturally?

First of all, sperm and egg have to meet. How does this happen?

Actually, the moment you are having sex with your partner is not the time you actually get pregnant.

Every month, a woman releases an egg (usually just one), on just one day. This event is called ovulation. The egg can be fertilised during a 24 hour window. If no sperm is available, willing or able, the egg resigns to her fate and dissolves.

Sperm must be there at the crucial moment, like paparazzi gathered around the red carpet, ready to be captivated by the egg’s glowing charm.

This requires premeditation. Luckily sperm have evolved to be up to the challenge. Sperm do not die instantaneously, in fact they can survive and healthily thrive in the female body after ejaculation for up to five days. Having regular sex in the week leading up to ovulation is your best strategy to ensure a crowd of diligent sperm are waiting for the egg’s release, ready to pounce, romance and fertilise. This dance happens in the fallopian tube. From there, the brand new embryo travels to the womb, seeking a home to implant, five days after egg and sperm were united.

Knowing approximately when your ovulation occurs can help ensure you plan sex in the lead up to this event. You don’t have to worry about the exact timing of ovulation - it’s not that important.

For the average woman, ovulation occurs 12 to 14 days prior to her expected menstrual period. If you have a clockwork 28 day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14. It’s not always exactly the same every month. Think of an ovarian follicle like a flower and the release of the egg like petals opening. Your ovary is not like a machine that responds identically and repeatedly to an electric programmed signal. Your body is a wonder of nature, with the inbuilt differences and imperfections that make earthly creatures so beautiful.

So from a week after your period starts (and for most people has finished) having sex second daily (twice during the week, once on the weekend) is perfect and is enough to optimise your chance of natural conception.

If your cycles are irregular and you have truly no idea when you are ovulating, don’t wait, see a fertility specialist. If you have tried to conceive for six months without success and you are beyond 35 years in age, same advice.

Every month, your natural chance of conception is for young healthy people 1 in 5. If no underlying issues exist, 80% of couples will be pregnant after six months trying to conceive naturally. 90% will be pregnant after 12 months. If you have been trying for longer than a year, together with your partner, you require and deserve a comprehensive fertility check up to understand any underlying issues and to help you to navigate them.
